Fremantle feels different from Perth. It is a port city of limestone warehouses, wide verandahs and narrow streets, with a reputation for street performers, markets, cafes and an easygoing creative spirit. It sits at the mouth of the Swan River, and a cooling afternoon sea breeze, known locally as the Fremantle Doctor, often sweeps through on hot summer days.

About Fremantle

Long before colonisation, the area was known as Walyalup to the Whadjuk Noongar people. Fremantle was settled by British colonists in 1829, the same year as the Swan River Colony, and grew as the region's port. Much of the town centre's character dates from the gold rush boom of the late 19th century, when grand hotels, warehouses and public buildings went up. Many survive, making Fremantle one of the best-preserved 19th-century port streetscapes in Australia.

Top things to do

Fremantle Prison

Built by convict labour in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison operated as a prison until 1991. It is now one of the eleven sites that make up the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing. Tours explore the cell blocks, the gallows and the prison's history, and some visit the flooded tunnels beneath. Book ahead for popular tours and check age guidelines for some experiences.

Fremantle Markets

The Fremantle Markets have been trading in their Victorian building since 1897. Inside are more than 150 stalls selling fresh produce, food, crafts, clothing and souvenirs, plus buskers. The markets are usually open from Friday to Sunday and on some public holidays.

The Cappuccino Strip

South Terrace is Fremantle's famous cafe strip, lined with outdoor tables and heritage buildings. It earned its nickname from the Italian-run cafes that have been here for decades. Grab a coffee, people-watch and wander the side streets.

Fishing Boat Harbour and the Round House

The harbour is the place for fish and chips by the water. Nearby, the Round House, built in 1831, is the oldest surviving public building in Western Australia. Its location also offers views over Bathers Beach.

Museums

The Western Australian Maritime Museum at Victoria Quay explores the state's relationship with the ocean, and the WA Shipwrecks Museum displays relics from Dutch shipwrecks, including the Batavia. Check official websites for opening hours and any admission fees.

Beaches

Bathers Beach is right in town, and South Beach, a short walk or ride south, is a calm family beach with grassy areas. Beyond, the coast continues to Coogee.

Suggested day plan

Arrive by train mid-morning and start at the Fremantle Markets. Walk to Fremantle Prison for a tour, then have lunch on the Cappuccino Strip. In the afternoon, visit the Round House and Bathers Beach, or the Maritime Museum. End the day with fish and chips at Fishing Boat Harbour and catch the sunset over the water.

Food and drink

Fremantle is a food and drink destination in its own right. Expect seafood, Italian and Portuguese influences from the port's migrant communities, craft breweries and plenty of cafes. The markets are great for snacks, and the harbour is famous for fish and chips. Prices and opening hours vary, so check before you go.

Shopping and the arts

Fremantle has independent shops, galleries, record stores and vintage clothing. The Fremantle Arts Centre, housed in a striking 19th-century building, has exhibitions, a shop and a summer concert program. Check its website for what is on.

Events

Fremantle's calendar includes festivals, markets and concerts throughout the year. Summer is the busiest season. Check local listings for current events.

Practical tips

Fremantle's centre is compact and best explored on foot. Weekends are lively, especially when the markets are open; weekdays are quieter. The Fremantle Doctor can make afternoons breezy, so bring a light layer. If you are driving, check parking signs carefully. Public toilets are available in the centre and near the harbour.

Accessibility

Much of the centre is flat, with footpaths and accessible public transport. Some heritage buildings and the prison have stairs or uneven surfaces. Check with individual venues for accessibility information.
