If you’re into blues and roots, I can definitely recommend these gigs, as I’ve personally seen The Violent Femmes (blues and roots fest in Fremantle 05), Blue Shaddy (Blues at Bridgetown 04, 05 and 06) and Double Entendre (City Farm, Norfolk Hotel recently). I’m very much looking forward to seeing Blue King Brown this weekend at Southbound, and I’ve also heard many good things about local Simon Kelly! If nothing else pops up, I think I may head down to the Valley Fest one… (update: Yes, I’m going, see you there!)

fairbridgeFairbridge Festival, an annual event held at Fairbridge Village near Pinjarra (about 100kms south of Perth) is on from 13 to 15 April 2007, the weekend after Easter.
This family-friendly festival is a celebration of folk, roots, blues, acoustic, celtic, a capella and world music. Fairbridge Village is a traffic-free, self-contained bushland site. Camping is available for the festival, but is limited, so get in quick when bookings open on 1 February!

The artists following are the highlights of the festival. See the complete line-up here, with links to the websites of many of the acts.

The theme of the 2007 festival is “Oceans and Islands”.

There are a whole range of different tickets available; Weekend, Saturday, Sunday or evening, and family, adult, concession, youth and child.
As an example, an adult weekend ticket costs $106 and a family weekend ticket (2 adults, 2 children under 18), is $225.
See the festival website for all the prices. These online prices are available until 5pm, 23 March, after that they will be more expensive and only available at the gate.

If you’re interesting in camping and accommodation, onsite camping or cottages need to be booked through the Fairbridge Village. Camping bookings open on Thursday 1 February until sold out (which sounds like it might be very quick).

Update 14/3/07: Dave Mathews Band have cancelled!!!

Finally the second announcement for the West Coast Blues n Roots, to be held in Fremantle on 31 March and 1 April 2007, has been made.

The following artists have been added to the line-up:

Saturday:
John Butler Trio, Bob Evans, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones (US), Eric Burdon, The Vasco Era, Diafrix and The Bamboos.

Sunday:
Larry Carlton and Robben Ford, Kaki King, Piers Faccini(UK), Zydeco Master Terrance Simien(US), Eugene Hideaway Bridges, Custom Kings, Kill Devil Hills, Will Conner and more.

See the rest of the line-up at my original post. Ben Harper, John Mayer, Dave Mathews Band, Wolfmother and Missy Higgins are some of the big names.

This huge event with around 40 performers is now spread over two days (you can get a ticket for one day though) and is held amongst the pines of the Esplanade Park, an extended site this year, with an extra stage.

Tickets are selling fast, so head over to the Sunset Events website to get your tickets without paying a booking fee.

ROOTS_imageThe Roots will no longer be playing at the West Coast Blues n Roots Festival (in Fremantle on 31 March/1 April), but will be performing their own show at Metro City on Saturday 14 April 2007.

Over the 20 years, The Roots have produced seven albums, including the critically acclaimed, Grammy-winning Things Fall Apart (UMA, 1999). The Tipping Point (UMA, 2004) debuted at #4 on the overseas Billboard Chart, scoring them two Grammy nominations and earning them 42nd place in Blender Magazine’s Top 50 CDs for the year 2004. Their latest release, “Game Theory” delivers 14 hard hitting tracks that express their views on the state of the world.

The Roots will be joined by Melbourne ensemble True Live (also performing as part of the Perth International Arts Festival at Beck’s Verandah on 15 February) and Mahalia Barnes (daughter of Jimmy).

Tickets are on sale through BOCS for $71.25.
It’s an 18+ event.

Paul Stanley (KISS) – 24 April 07

KISS front-man Paul Stanley is touring Australia and will perform in Perth on Tuesday 24 April 2007 at Burswood Theatre.

Stanley recently released his second solo album “Live To Win” (coming 28 years after his self-titled 1978 solo debut) and backed it up with a hugely acclaimed US club tour late last year. Stanley has only done one previous solo tour in 1989, so the buzz amongst fans about the shows was huge.

Tickets will be on sale through Ticketek from 12 February.

Apologies about being slow with this, I read this on accessallareas yesterday! Playing catchup tonight!

Boy George DJ Set – 25 February 07

Boy George, former lead singer of the Culture Club and ‘gay icon’, will perform a DJ set at The Court on Sunday 25 February 2007.
Boy George is coming to Perth for his first Australian performance in almost a decade, and the gig will start at 4pm.

There is very little to write about Boy George that hasn’t already been written. The singer of classic songs like “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” and “Karma Chamelon” turned his hand to DJing in the early 90s and has carved a niche for himself as one of the most creative DJs around, playing a progressive style of funky house that has won him fans the world over.

Boy George will be supported by Lisa Loud (UK), Reel Sessions Live (Sydney) and local Perth DJs.

Tickets go on sale soon from BOCS Ticketing.
