My weekly summary about what’s on this weekend, including concerts, comedy shows, plays, markets, festivals and more! Check out the Event Calendar for more!
Music

The Butterfly Effect is playing at The Foundry in Cannington on Wednesday night, Heat in Perth on Saturday night, and the Newport Hotel in Fremantle on Sunday night.

Radio Birdman are playing at the Leopold Hotel in Bicton on Wednesday night and Club Capitol in Perth on Friday night.

Bluebottle Kiss are launching their new album at the Norfolk Hotel in Fremantle on Thursday night and the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth on Friday night.

The West Australian Opera opens with Nubucco on Thursday night at His Majesty’s Theatre. It will be on until Saturday 26 August.

The RTR FM Radiothon Closing Party is on at the Bakery Artrage Complex on Saturday from 7pm.

Nathan Gaunt is playing at the Rosemount Hotel on Saturday night, and also next Friday at the Fly By Night Club.

Performing Arts

Akmal, a comedian who had 27 sellout shows at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, is performing at Subiaco Arts Centre until Sunday 20 August.

Circus Joseph Ashton is in Rockingham till Sunday 20 August (and from the 25th in Stirling).

The Merchant of Venice is a play by the Belle Shakespeare Company and will be performed at the Playhouse Theatre from Wednesday till Saturday.

Eurobeat is on at the Regal Theatre to 20 August. It’s a musical comedy tribute to Eurovision, with audience participation!

Swan Lake on Ice is being performed by the Imperial Ice Stars at Burswood Dome from Friday until 27 August.

Nature as explained by Theatre, performed by Cut Snake Comedy is on at the Blue Room on James St in Northbridge until 26 August.

Other

Trek the Trail is on for the third year in ‘the Hills’ on Sunday. Starting at Mundaring you can walk or cycle the 9km to Darlington. Along the way there will be heritage and environmental interpretations, music and interactive art spaces. At the end will be a community celebration.

Cyclists leave between 9 and 9.30am and walkers at 10am. There will be breakfast available at the start, and shuttle busses to return people to Mundaring. This is a free event!

The Perth International Boat Show is on at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre from Wednesday till Sunday.

There are still a few events on for National Science Week, which is on till 20 August.

Springtime at Araluen Botanic Park, Roleystone. I hope the recent storms haven’t blown all the petals away (if the bulbs are out yet!).

The Pregnancy, Babies & Children’s Expo is on at Claremont Showgrounds from Friday till Sunday. Read more about it at my Kids Enjoy Perth! weblog.

Music

The Veronicas are performing at Burswood Dome on Friday night, but it is sold out.

Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz is playing at the Fly By Night Club in Freo on Friday night.

The Dave Mann Collective and others are playing at Metropolis in Fremantle on Friday night.

Major Break III (breakbeat) is on at Ambar Nightclub in Perth on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Performing Arts

Ben Elton at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday (sold out, unless you want to go alone.)

Love Child at Playhouse Theatre is on till 13 August, tickets at BOCS.

Springtime at Araluen Botanic Park, Roleystone.

The WA Craft Quilt & Stitch Show is on at Claremont Showgrounds from Friday to Sunday, from 9am to 5pm.

The action packed Avon Descent is on. It starts in Northam on the Avon River on Saturday and ends in Bayswater on Sunday afternoon. Check out my post for info about all the festivals surrounding the event (at Sandalford Winery, Belmont and Bayswater).

Winter Walk and Wine Tasting. On Sunday there is a special event starting in Darlington. Take an escorted walk to Glen Forest and learn about the history, flora and fauna. Then on to Avalon Vineyard for wine tasting and tasting platters. $50p.p. all inclusive, and bookings essential as the tour is limited to a group of 12 (I have no idea if this is full yet, sorry). The Golden West Antique and Collectors Fair is on at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Free valuations are available from 12 to 3pm. Entry is $5 and children under 16 get in free. Proceeds go to charity.

And the monthly Psychic Awareness Magical Fair is also on in Freo, at the Town Hall, from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Araluen Botanical Park, Roleystone

Today we visited Araluen Botanical Park in Roleystone.

The spring festival had started at Araluen, but unfortunately not all the tulips were out yet. Other bulbs were though, and the park was very pretty anyway.
