Sculpture by the Sea 2010

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Sculpture by the Sea opened today at Cottesloe Beach and will be available to visit for free until 23 March!

Over 60 local, interstate and international artists transform Perth’s most popular beach into a stunning sculpture park overlooking the Indian Ocean.

It is a big winner with the kids, for whom the sculptures become a giant fantasy land, among which they have a ball.

A few more details at the EnjoyPerth! event page.

Hidden Secrets of Northbridge Audio Tour

Monday, January 18th, 2010

James St, a long long time ago

Just the other day I had someone tweet me on the Twitters – “hey grum, I’m bored. What can I do now in Perth that is fun and won’t cost me an arm and a leg?”. Reading this tweet, I immediately did two things: firstly I threw my shoe at Jamie (resident EnjoyPerth! dish washer, hot air ballon-ist and meteorologist) as he was the one who tweeted me (he was supposed to be working and not messing around on the internet on the other side of the office). Secondly, I sat there dumbfounded to the answer of his question as it was 2PM in the afternoon and there weren’t any events in the EP! database that were on at that particular moment in time.

Later that evening (whilst soaking in the EnjoyPerth! company spa) I decided to pull out the ol’ laptop an listen to some internet radio. Two hours later at my desk I decided to listen to some more internet radio, however this time I was using the spare office laptop as my previous laptop seemed to have an issue with being under water and blew up. Because of this, all my saved shortcuts to my favourite radio stations were gone so I promptly typed in www.rtrfm.com.au into the ol’ web browser and went searching for a link to their streaming service.

Whist at the RTR homepage, I stumbled on a link labelled “Northbridge Tour” and promptly clicked on it. This magic link seems to have solved all of my problems. Well, except the problem of explaining the multiple laptops I seem to break to the boss when she gets back from holidays.

The kids at RTRFM have recently stitched together a gorgeous walking podcast tour of Northbridge. Lasting approximately three hours, this series of recordings will guide you though the streets of Northbridge highlighting the rich history of the suburb and revealing lesser known secrets about the Perth’s favourite late night party spot.

You can grab the first two tacks here. For the rest of the series, jump on over to the RTR page and download to your heart’s content.

Not only is this series free but it can be enjoyed by everyone with a portable media player and a couple of free hours up their sleeve.

Kings Park Festival – September 2009

Friday, August 28th, 2009

kings_park_fest_09The Kings Park Festival is on again, running all through September which is the best time in the park, WA wildflower season.

The Kings Park Festival is a long-running tradition to celebrate spring and the wonderful wildflowers that appear throughout the south west of Western Australia during this time. From its humble beginnings as a five day event in 1965, depicting plant specimens in jars on trestle tables to the current format of floral displays, live music, exhibitions, workshops, interpretive artworks, guided walks and family activities during the entire month of September, the Festival has always attracted large crowds.

There are some wonderful family events like the Wild Fairyland Festival on 20 September and some great live music performances for adults and children throughout the month, plus many many other various events.

See the Kings Park Festival website for all the many details.
