See infor for Australia Day 2009!

Australia Day is coming around again quick, and this year it’s on a Saturday, and we get a public holiday on Monday 28 January!

Here’s a summary of events happening, starting with some of the biggest ones! There’s also some concerts and musicals on, see the bottom of this list.

City of Perth – Skyworks / City of South Perth
Lotterywest Skyworks is the main event, with a huge fireworks spectacular from 9pm. From about 4pm the water regatta and air show starts.

A “Survival Concert” is held at the Supreme Court Gardens from 1pm to 7.30pm, celebrating traditional and contemporary Indigenous culture. Free entry.

From 2.3pm Barrack Square is a Family Entertainment Area (fully enclosed, $14 entry, book!)

From 3pm there are Youth Activities & Games at Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth and from 4pm there’s the Stay Pumped Zone at Langley Park, where there’ll be plenty of activities and entertainment including Perth bands Red Jezebel and New Rules for Boats.

City of Fremantle
For the second year there will be fireworks in Fremantle. From 8.45pm at the Fishing Boat Harbour. There will be three firing locations this year, so it should be a bigger spectacle! Good places to view the fireworks are around Fishing Boat Harbour, at Monument Hill, Esplanade Reserve, South Beach and the Round House.

There is a citizenship ceremony at Fremantle Arts Centre from 10am, and following that activities and music for family fun. Free entry, gold coin donation for sausage sizzle.

City of Armadale
From 5.30pm there will be entertainment and amusement rides in Minnawarra Park, and fireworks from 8.45pm.

From 6pm there will be a concert, broadcasting by 98.5 Sonshine FM, ceremonies and fireworks at Ashfield Reserve.

Keating! The Musical – opens this week

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Keating!Keating!, the award winning musical, comes to Perth and will be performed from Wednesday 9 January to Sunday 3 February 2008 at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco.

Keating! burst into life at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival where it won all available awards including the Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show, The Age Critics’ Award and the Golden Gibbo. Following sold-out seasons around Australia, creator Casey Bennetto won a 2005 Green Room Award and a 2006 and 2007 Helpmann Awards.

Casey Bennetto’s scathingly hilarious lyrics tear through the reign and tragic fall of the Placido Domingo of Australian politics. Part French farce, part Greek tragedy, and all Australian history – “the musical we had to have” transports you back to a time less politically grey.

Tickets available for around $60 from Ticketek.
