What’s on in Perth – 12 to 18 February 2007

My weekly summary with the highlights of what’s on in Perth, Western Australia, this week; Monday 12 to Sunday 18 February 2007.

Music:

The UWA Perth International Arts Festival is on from 9 February to 4 March 2007, and the Beck’s Verandah line-up is packed full, and includes free entry after the main acts, from 10.30pm each night (bands and djs).

The Tiger Lillies perform bizarre cabaret at Beck’s Veranda on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 February 07.

The Kransky Sisters perform at Beck’s Verandah on 13 and 14 February, but sold out.

Wednesday is Valentine’s Day.
Sunset Valentine Concert at Joondalup Resort, FREE (there’s a bar, and bring a picnic)
Valentine’s Day 70’s Disco Dance Party at Emar’s in the Swan Valley

Damien Rice performs at the Fremantle Arts Centre on Thursday 15 February.

Evanescence perform at Challenge Stadium on Thursday.

The Searchers perform at Woodvale Tavern on Thursday night, Friends Restaurant on Friday, High Road Tavern on Saturday, Joondalup Resort Sunday afternoon, and Friends Restaurant again on Sunday evening.

Jazz in the Park in Stirk Park, Kalamunda from 6pm on Thursdays.

Expatriate perform at the Norfolk on Thursday and the Rosemount on Friday 16 December, this last show together with Red Riders.

True Live and Macromantics perform at Beck’s Verandah on Thursday.

The Boyup Brook Country Music Festival is happening about 300kms south of Perth from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 Feb.

Blue King Brown perform with special guests – Thursday 15 February at The Paddo, Saturday 17 Feb at Knights Winery for Valley Fest, and Sunday 18 February 2007 at the Fly By Night Club.

The WAMi Fesival opens on Friday 16 February with a showcase event at Club Capitol, featuring Birds of Tokyo, and continues until 25 February, with many great musical showcases!

City of Perth Opera in the Park, a free event part of the Perth Festival from 8pm at the Supreme Court Gardens on Friday.

The Garage Kids Fesival is held at Fremantle Arts Centre on Saturday 17 Feb from 1pm, with The Flairz and others, as part of the WAMi Festival.

Valley Fest, with Blue King Brown and lots of support, is held at Knights Winery on Saturday 17 February 2007.

The Fab Four, a Beatles Tribute group, perform at Perth Zoo on Saturday.

Snow Patrol perform at the Belvoir Amphitheatre on Saturday. (sold out)

Broome to Bicton Concert at Bicton Quarantine Park from 4pm on Saturday, entry is donation.

City of Wanneroo free summer concert, GANGgajang perform at Liddell Reserve in Girrawheen from 4pm on Saturday.

City of Stirling ‘Absolute Kylie Tribute Show‘ from 5.30pm at Dianella Regional Open Space on Saturday (free).

Israel Houghton and New Breed perform at Challenge Stadium on Saturday night.

World Music in the Park, City of Joondalup and Perth Festival present Dhafer Youseff at Mawson Park in Hillarys from 7pm on Saturday night (Free).

Holly Throsby and Dan Kelly perform at Mojos Bar on Saturday night

The Good Vibrations Festival (Beastie Boys, Jurrasic 5, Timo Maas, Casius etc etc) is happening at Belvoir on Sunday 18 February 2007.

Triple J ‘Live at the Wireless’ show with Bob Evans at The Rosemount Hotel on Sunday.

Boyz II Men perform at Metro City on Sunday.

Collective Latino perform as part of Kulcha on Swan at Kingfisher Park in Ballajura on Sunday from 3pm, free.

City of Gosnells presents People in Park/Pets in the Park with live music and entertainment from 50m in Armstrong Park, Huntingdale.

GANGgajang perform in McCallum Park for the Town of Vic Park, free from 5pm on Sunday.

Jay Weston & Sarah Harmony perform for the Town of Vincent at Hyde Park from 5.30pm on Sunday, free.

City of Nedlands Summer in the Park concert in Allen Park, Swanbourne from 5.30pm on Sunday, free.

Performing and Visual Arts:

Walking With Dinosaurs in on at Burswood Dome from 14 to 17 February 2007.

The UWA Perth International Arts Festival is on from 9 February to 4 March 2007, and is jam packed with all sorts of entertainment, some of which I’ll highlight separately.

The Lady Oi, by Black Swan Theatre Company is performed at Playhouse Theatre from 2 to 17 February.

Fragmented is an award-winning play performed at the Blue Room Theatre from 6 to 24 February 2007.

The Lost Girl, by Barking Gecko Theatre Company, is theatre for 5 to 10 year olds, and is on at Subiaco Arts Centre from 12 February to 3 March 2007.

The Kransky Sisters perform at Beck’s Verandah on 13 and 14 February, sold out.

The Romantic Misadventures of a Perth Girl Looking for Love is romantic comedy without romance, and will be performed at the East Amphitheatre from 14 to 23 February.

Ballet at the Quarry (City Beach) in on from 14 February to 9 March 2007.

Houghton Wines presents Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ on Saturday 17 February.

Midsummer Feast, the annual “foodie” festival in the Swan Valley is held from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February 07.

The Summersun Festival continues with Movie Stars at the Astor on Monday, a Twilight Cruise on Tuesday, a Valentines Dinner Dance on 14 February, Blast from the Past at Freo Prison on Thursday, the Summersun Dance Final on Fruday, Nostalgia Drags and a beach party on Saturday and the finale on Sunday in Rockingham.

Walking With Dinosaurs in on at Burswood Dome from 14 to 17 February 2007.

The Holiday and Travel Expo is on at Fremantle Passenger Terminal from Friday to Sunday 18th.

The Joondalup Home and Lifestyle Expo is on at the Arena, from Friday to Sunday.

The RTR Pop Quiz is held at Beck’s Verandah on Friday.

The Rottnest Channel Swim is held on Saturday 17 Feb 07.

The Fremantle Village Art Markets are held from 10am to 5.30pm every Thursday until the end of April. This week the Freo Tomato Festival is on from midday, with tastings, demos and workshops!
Joondalup Sunset Markets are held from 6pm on Friday. From 7pm there is free music on Reid Promenade.
The Mandjar Markets are held at the Waterfront in Mandurah every Sunday from 1 to 5pm until the end of April.

Tattoo Spectacular – 28 April 2007

tattoo_spectacular_imageThe Tattoo Spectacular is coming to Perth, Australia! It will be held at Members Equity Stadium on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 April 2007.

Tattoo Spectacular showcasing some of the world’s finest musicians, performers, dancers and singers combined with extraordinary state of the art lighting, audio visual effects, amazing sound and the giant screen with never before seen footage, this production will leave you awestruck and inspired.

The cast and crew of almost 900 include the amazing Band & Bugles of The Rifles from UK, Band of the Grenadier Guards direct from Buckingham Palace, Dance Ensemble of the People’s Liberation Army of China, Tongan Royal Corps of Musicians, 100 strong Pipe & Drum Band & our very own OzScot Highland Dancers.
This event will go ahead rain or shine.

Anthony Callea + Chris Murphy – 24 Feb 07

Anthony Callea will perform at Scarborough Beach for 92.9 and the City of Stirling, on Saturday 24 February 2007. Chris Murphy is also performing.

This is a FREE concert, but you do need to get yourself a ticket!
You can win ‘VIP’ tickets from 92.9, or just get free tickets from BOCS (you can’t get them online, and depending how you do get them, there will be a booking fee).
The event is also mentioned on the City of Stirling website as a family concert as part of their ‘Festival of Surf’ weekend.

It’s all ages, alcohol free and byo picnics. Gates open at 4pm, and I assume this will be held in the new amphitheatre on the beach.

WAMi festival – 16 to 25 Feb 2007

The WAMi Festival (WA Music Industry) is held from 16 to 25 February 2007.
Before you do anything else, go and vote for the public voting categories on myspace (you need an account), voting closes 12 February.

The WAMi Awards are happening on Wednesday 21 February 2007 at Beck’s Verandah (Perth Concert Hall), and will feature performances by Eskimo Joe, Little Birdy, Dave Hole, The Stems, Double Entendre and DJ Matty P. Robbie Buck and Rosie Beaton from triple j are presenting. You can get tickets from Heatseeker for around $55.

On Saturday 24 February the Saturday Spectacular, Northbridge Music Festival is held, with bands (way to many to mention) playing throughout Northbridge from midday. A Day Pass that will get you into the main venues is available from Heatseeker for $22 + bf (will be $30 on the night). See the gig guide here.

Toni Collette & The Finish – 10/11 March 2007

toni_colletteToni Collette & The Finish perform at The Rosemount Hotel on Saturday 10 March and the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle on Sunday 12 March 2007.

This Australian tour follows a few successful shows on the East coast recently, including the Homebake Festival.

If there’s one track on the ‘Beautiful Awkward Pictures’ album that shines more brightly than others, it is ‘Look Up’. Fans, reviewers and radio programmers that have heard the album have all highlighted this track as a glorious and uplifting piece of song writing by Toni Collette, coupled with an arrangement that allows her vocals to really shine and the band to rise with her to heart pounding heights.

Music
My Chemical Romance and Trivium played in Perth on Monday night.

Behind Crimson Eyes perform at The Foundry on Wednesday, The Players Bar on Thursday (all ages and 18+), The Amplifier Bar on Friday and the Newport on Sunday.

Jazz in the Park with the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band in Stirk Park, Kalamunda from 6 to 8pm on Thursday (every Thursday till end of March).

The Gozzy Rock all ages band comp heats are held at Don Russel Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie from 9 February to 2 March

The Summersun Festival (rock n roll, hot rods, swing dance, etc) begins with Big Al’s Poker Run on Saturday, which ends with a party in Fremantle, and continues with the official opening ceremony in Northbridge on Sunday.

The free, all ages Boo-Yah Festival is held e-Central TAFE and City Farm in East Perth on Saturday from 1 to 6pm, featuring music, workshops, climbing wall, dance workshops etc etc.

Blues in the Night is happening at Araluen Botanical Park in Roleystone on Saturday night, featuring Mike De Velta, Jean-Guy Lemire, Billy Boy Miskimmin, Annie Neil Super Band and Stingray.

The Bunbury International Jazz Festival is held the whole weekend in Bunbury, 2 hours south of Perth.

Devil’s Kitchen Music Festival is held at Rosemount Hotel on Saturday 10 February 2007, with Dreadnaught (VIC), Fort (NSW), Subtruck, The Fuzz… 13 bands over 2 stages in total, stonepunkrock.

The Rat Pack’s Back Concert is held at Perth Zoo on Saturday evening.

Adults Only Pool Party number 1 is held at Adventure World on Saturday night, featuring live music by Audioperv and Flyte.

The Mundaring Weir Hotel Festival begins with a performance by Jane Rutter on Saturday night.

A free community concert with the Oz Big Band is held at Len Packham Reserve in Coolbellup, organised by the City of Cockburn, on Saturday evening.

A Twilight Concert with Hip Mo Toast & Libby Hammer is held at Upper Reach Winery on Saturday night.
Angus and Julie Stone perform at Beck’s Verandah, but it has sold out.

Whiteman Park continue with their ‘Summer of Bush Dances‘, with the Southern Cross Bush Band on Saturday night, entry includes a free train ride.
Eric Clapton performs at Members Equity Stadium on Sunday 11 February, Mia Dyson supports.

Theatre / Comedy / Film / Circus

On opening night there’s a free family spectacular at the Supreme Court Gardens in Perth from 8.30pm. A start will be made on the huge Travelling Curtain!

Fragmented is an award-winning play performed at the Blue Room Theatre from 6 to 24 February 2007.

Shakespeare in the Park, a Comedy of Errors is on at King’s Park till 10 February and performed by Deckchair Theatre.

The Fremantle Outdoor Film Festival is held from 1 to 24 February 2007 in Princess May Park. Check out all the other outdoor cinemas at this post!

Circus Joseph Ashton is in Mandurah till 10 February 2007.

Gloucester Park Fireworks Night is on Friday 9 February, with the horse racing, a live band, children’s ride, Chinese acts to celebrate the Chinese New Year (which is the 18th….) and fireworks after the last race.

The Summersun Festival (rock n roll, hot rods, swing dance, etc) begins with Big Al’s Poker Run on Saturday, which ends with a party in Fremantle, and continues with the official opening ceremony in Northbridge on Sunday.

The City of Bayswater hold ‘An Evening in the Park’ on Friday, with lots of fun for the kids and some music!
The Flight Centre Travel Expo is held at the Perth Convention Centre, and the ANDA Coin, Banknote and Stamp Show is held at Burswood Casino, both on Saturday and Sunday.

The Fremantle Village Art Markets are held from 10am to 5.30pm every Thursday until the end of April. From 12.30 a free gig by ‘gyprockers’ Double Entendre.
Joondalup Sunset Markets are held from 6pm on Friday. From 7pm there is free music on Reid Promenade, this week ‘Songs From the Mountain’, in the style of movies ‘O
Brother, Where Art Thou?’ and ‘Walk the Line’.
The Mandjar Markets are held at the Waterfront in Mandurah every Sunday from 1 to 5pm until the end of April.

Keith Urban – 22 May 2007

keith_urban_imageKeith Urban returns to Australia for his “Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy World Tour”. He performs in Perth on Tuesday 22 May 2007 at the Burswood Dome.

Urban has become well-known for his electrifying, sweat-drenched, bang-for-ya-buck, dynamite performances, which have received critically praise throughout the world. A combination of straight ahead musicianship and the latest in concert technology, at the heart of any Keith Urban concert are the songs; “Somebody Like You,” “Once In A Lifetime,” “Better Life,” “Days Go By,” “You’ll Think Of Me,” and Urban’s latest “Stupid Boy.” All are expected to be performed, along with other surprises.

George Benson + Al Jarreau – 24 March 2007

Benson Jarreau imageJazz legends George Benson and Al Jarreau are touring Australia together and will perform ‘An Evening on the Green’ on Saturday 24 March 2007.

Though it has taken three decades, the pairing of GEORGE BENSON with AL JARREAU – peerless music legends who both sprang from jazz into the international R&B and pop mainstream – was pure destiny. Both have earned multiple Gold and Platinum albums, totaling millions of copies sold, along with coveted GRAMMY® awards in both the pop and jazz categories.

The concert for the ‘Givin’ it up’ Australia tour will be held in King’s Park, and Mark Sholtez is supporting.
