AWESOME Festival – 17 to 26 Nov 06

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

awesomeThe AWESOME Arts Festival will once again hit Perth streets from 17 to 26 November 2006. It’s a comtemporary arts festival for ‘young people and their families’, and most of the events are free!

Where else will you find…a gang of giant Ned Kelly’s roaming the CBD… how about dozens of life size toys, games & fantastic machines made from junk?… the 217th Canadian Flying Squadron staging death defying feets of aeronautical brilliance in Hay St Mall… new media installations galore… a claustrophobic fairytale about lost love and a seaworthy teacup… anime & giant emaki scrolls… a short film festival… a hall of mirrors for the noughties… brave new performance art by young people and heaps of free family fun, with so much more on offer than you will ever get through in a day…

The festival will feature artists from around the globe, and the festival program will be launched on 11 October. I’ll let you know about all the major events, and keep an eye on the event calendar.

Red Dog – 7 to 21 October 06

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

DOG06Red Dog, presented by Black Swan Theatre Company, will be performed at Playhouse Theatre from 7 to 21 October 2006. The ‘tail’ will be brought to life using puppetry, music and physical performance.

Born in 1971, ‘Red Dog’, a Kelpie cross, lived the life of a canine hobo. Roaming around the Pilbara, ‘Red Dog’ spent most of his life searching for his owner who died many years before. From Roebourne to Point Samson, Port Hedland to Broome, Tom Price to Perth, the path of Red Dog’s journey took him into many people’s lives. His adventures are now North-West folklore. When he eventually died, Red Dog’s soul became a part of the Pilbara itself.

Tickets available from BOCS. Standard price is $45, but all kinds of concessions and preview performances available.

Zonk Magazine

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

I recently discovered Zonk Magazine, an online magazine/blog/podcast that is ‘for the mindful young people of Perth who enjoy things with a slightly subversive specialness.’

In my own words (which usually aren’t that great), I guess I’d call it ‘arty’ (in a good way!). They fill a great gap that I’m not really covering, and have nice photos and design. You can subscribe to their email newsletter and you will recieve the monthly issues, which are also available on the website. They’ve also got a blog, which unfortunately doesn’t have a rss feed, or comments, but is nice to keep an eye on.

On Thursday 28 September 06 they’re having an official launch party at Gilkison’s Dance Studio featuring a number of bands and dj’s. More details in their blog (scroll down).

Kevin Bloody Wilson – 16 Dec 06

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

sfx13771Kevin Bloody Wilson will be in Perth again on 16 December 2006, performing at Burswood Theatre.

Those who are familiar with Kevin Bloody Wilson’s outrageous stage show will be pleased to learn that he’s coming back to WA armed with lots of new songs as well as a bunch of Kev classics and Kev ‘talkabout’ that will leave you in stitches. Those who have never seen Kev’s show are advised to bring their best well oiled singing voices and leave their sense of political correctness at the door. Kevin Bloody Wilson is Australia’s Original Outback Outlaw – prepare to piss yourself laughing.

Tickets through Ticketek on sale now for $45.00

He’s also performing in Mandurah on the 14th and Bunbury on the 17th of December.

Coca-Cola Live – 25 Oct 2006

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

The Coca-Cola Live’n'Local Tour is coming to Perth on 25 October 2006 and will be happening at a 5 hour show at Burswood Dome.
The line up includes The Veronicas, Evermore, End of Fashion, After The Fall and The Hot Lies.

The five local bands from around Australia that have won a spot in the line-up are The Oceans, Stealing O’Neal, Dead Day Sun, Straight 2 the Ace and Four Minute Mile.

Tickets go on sale from the Coca-Cola Live website from 4pm (WA time) Thursday 28 September 06.

UPDATE: As far as I can tell, the only way to get tickets is to become a member of the Coca-Cola website (which I found a hassle in itself!), get points by buying special coca-cola(and a few other brands) bottles and typing in the codes on there on the website, and then redeeming those points to get a ticket to this concert! You then need to print out the email, and take it to a Ticketek outlet to swap it for an actual ticket!!! Pfffff!

The Big HOO HAA – every Sat night

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

DSCN2001Last week I went to see the Big HOO HAA with friends. It’s on every Saturday night at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den, upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel in Highgate (just north of Northbridge, along Beaufort Street). It’s improv comedy, in the style of ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’ Two teams of comedians competing against each other, often going by audience suggestions.

You can book tickets via BOCS, or get there before 8pm and get your tickets at the door and go back downstairs to get a drink. The show starts at 8.30pm.
Apparently it’s a full house every week (it certainly was last week), so do make sure you book, or get there early. Tickets are $15, $12 concession.
As I said, it starts at 8.30pm. There’s two short breaks (well, there was when we went!), which means you can go downstairs to get a drink in you like, and it finishes around 10.30/11pm.

I was quite impressed with the Brisbane Hotel; an old building, but newly renovated. Very flash! Plenty of parking around the back (for a fee) and in the streets surrounding.
