Telstra Rally Australia – 26 to 29 October 06

Telstra Rally Australia 2006 is on in and around Perth from 26 to 29 October 2006.
This is the last time the Australian round of the championship will be held in Perth, so your last chance to see this exciting motor sport action!

There are different stages for the cars to complete in Dwellingup (Friday), a Wespine plantation south-east of Perth(Saturday) and Mundaring (Sunday). Then the cars head over to Gloucester Park in Perth for the Super Special Stage each evening.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday 26 July at Ticketmaster. Tickets start at $20 (for one night at Gloucester Park), and there all kinds of tickets available.
A special internet presale for previous ticketholders (so if you went last year) is on from Wednesday 19 July.

Music

Clare Bowditch & the Feeding Set are performing at the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth on Friday, and the Norfolk Hotel in Freo on Saturday.
The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s perform at Metropolis in Freo on Friday (sold out).
Wolfmother play Challenge Stadium on Sunday.
Carus is playing at the Fly By Night Club in Freo on Friday.
Army In Concert, featuring Rhonda Burchmore is on at the Perth Concert Hall on Sunday afternoon from 3.00pm, with all proceeds going to the charity Legacy.

Performing arts

Amadeus is still on at His Majesty’s Theatre until Saturday.
Menopause the Musical at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco until 23 July.

Circus Joseph Ashton has set up the Big Top in Maddington until 30 July.
Woyzeck, by the Black Swan Theatre Company is on at PICA, and apparently is avant-garde theatre at its most breathtaking.

Kids

Other (film, expo’s, markets, etc)

Revelation, Perth’s International Film Festival is on at Luna Leederville and Luna SX in Fremantle. As part of this there will be a S.P.L.I.F (screening Perth’s local independent films) on Sunday night at the Bakery Artrage Complex in Northbridge.
The monthly Psychic Awareness Magical Fair is on at Fremantle Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday
The monthly Guildford Heritage Art and Craft Market is on at the Guildford Town Hall on Sunday.
Last chance to see the Amazing Human Body Exhibition, it’s on until Sunday at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.
The Perth Winter Arts Festival is of course also still going strong.

Cirque Du Soleil – Varekai – August/Sept/Oct 07

Cirque du Soleil are coming back to Perth with their show ‘Varekai‘, from 17 August to 7 October 2007!!
Tickets on sale through Ticketek.

Ticket prices for adults seem to range from $70 restricted view to $250 VIP. Children are a bit cheaper, and it also depends on which night you go.
We really enjoyed Quidam in August last year!

BREAK! at Burswood Theatre – CANCELLED

I’m finding it hard to describe BREAK!, but as far as I can tell it’s a combination of people breakdancing, beatboxing, street dancing and dj’ing….
BREAK! is made up of a crew of 11 who are street taught or classically trained, and have performed with the likes of Avril Lavigne, Alicia Keys, Eminem, The Wutang Clan, Cypress Hill, Linkin Park, Will Smith, Public Enemy, P.O.D., Pink, Boyz II Men, Prodigy, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.
BREAK! is on at the Burswood Theatre from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 July.

Adult tickets are $62 and students and children $39. There are also concession, group and family tickets available. Adults can also sit in the B reserve and these tickets are $52.

Semi-Permanent 06

Semi-Permanent is a creative conference with international, interstate and local speakers, side-events and exhibitions.

The conference is on this Tuesday the 11th from 2.00pm at The Bakery Artrage Complex in Northbridge.
Speakers include famous designer Joshua Davis, King Brown Magazine, Anyhow, Stormie and Design is Kinky (TWIN and Fafi couldn’t make it).

There is an after party from 8.00pm

General tickets are $90 and include the after party and entry to the ‘Everyday’ exhibition.

Side-events

The exhibition ‘Everyday’ opens on Thursday 13 July at Breadbox in the Bakery Artrage complex, and will run from the 14th to the 16th. Artists exhibitioning are Paul Pope, Antony Micallef, Linda Zacks, Anthony Yankovic, Anyhow, Tra Selhtrow, ABCK and Travis Millard.

Another exhibition is on at Distracted Gallery on Oxford St in Leederville, with Kyle Hughes-Odgers displaying works on canvas, until 15 July.

Monstermunch exhibition is on until Sunday 16 July at Keith and Lottie, William Street, Northbridge.

Full Deck – Graduate Skateboard Exhibition. Graduating Graphic Designers from Central TAFE showcasing their contemporary works on skateboards. The opening is on Saturday 15 July (6-8pm) and it’s open till 28 July, at CDC @ Central Tafe, Northbridge.

With the school holidays coming up, I was seeing so many school holiday activities, that I thought it would probably warrant starting up a second blog just for events and activities for kids.

So for the last week or so I’ve been busy setting up Kids Enjoy Perth, just in time for the school holidays. Most activities start on Monday, and ones that don’t start until next week will be posted during the week.

Events this weekend – 7/8/9 July

It’s Seafood and Shiraz Weekend in the Swan Valley, with lots of restaurants serving….WA seafood and Swan Valley shiraz!!

Circus Joseph Ashton opens in Maddington on Friday; I’ve driven past the big top, they’re ready to go! They’ll be there till 30 July.

For those into horses, the Karma Resorts 2006 Winter Dressage is on all weekend at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon.

On Sunday there is a Reserve Forces Day Parade/Service from 10.00am at the State War Memorial in King’s Park.

And if you feel like taking part in a quiz on Sunday afternoon, head on down to the Hyde Park Hotel in West Perth. All proceeds support the Shenton Park Dog Refuge. Book tickets ($10): 9281 8166 or 9275 4303

Revelation – Perth International Film Festival 06

Revelation, Perth’s International Film Festival and Conference, will be on at various locations in Perth from 13 to 23 July 2006.

The program includes:

  • Films from the four corners of the globe including Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Australia, USA, UK, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Vietnam and elsewhere.
  • Over 100 individual works
  • 23 Australian premieres
  • Guest film introductions and Q&As
  • Special forums, workshops and masterclasses
  • Oscar nominees and festival award winners from Rotterdam, Sundance, Slamdance, Berlin and Toronto film fests.

The main venues are Luna Cinemas in Leederville, and Luna SX in Fremantle.

Opening night
Opening night is on Thursday 13 July at Luna Leederville (Oxford St) from 7.00pm. The film Ambulancen (a low budget crime film from Denmark) will be shown, and there will be a party at new club ‘The Manor’ (back of the Hip-e Club) with live music from The Ben Gray Band, complimentary drinks and finger food from 9-11pm. Tickets for the whole night are $30/$25 concs.

Closing night
Closing night will be held at The Bakery Artrage Complex in Northbridge on Sunday 23 July, and will feature live music (a cd launch even), dj’s, vj’s and a rare and special screening of 50’s, 60’s and 70’s 16mm educational films. It’s on from 7.00pm till late, and tickets are $18, and $7 after 9.30pm.

S.P.L.I.F – Screening Perth’s Local Independent Films
Short WA films will be shown at The Bakery in Northbridge on Sunday 16 July from 6.00pm, and at Mojo’s in North Fremantle on Tuesday 18 July from 7.00pm. On both evenings there will be live music by The Ben Gray Band. Tickets are $10.

NAIDOC Week Events

NAIDOC celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. All Australians are encouraged to participate in NAIDOC Week activities. The theme this year is: Respect the Past – Believe in the Future

A lot of local councils have special events for their area’s, it’s best to check out your own local council website.

Traditional Art and Stories of the Bibbullman People
Blender Gallery, Central Walk, Joondalup – 5 July 06 to 13 July 06

Part of the City of Joondalup’s NAIDOC Week events. Renowned aboriginal artist, Toogarr Morrison presents indigenous stories in his paintings.
Artist talk will be held on Friday 7 July at 10am.

Diana Crew-Reid’s Indigenous Art Expo
Mundaring Arts Centre – 7 July 06 to 6 August 06

Artist Diana Crew-Reid’s first solo exhibition, portrays her family history through paintings, drawings and sculpture.
Friday 7th July at 7:30pm and on Sunday 9th July at 2pm, Diana will be presenting an Artist’s Talk, so come along and meet the artist and discuss her ideas and inspiration behind the show.

Big Sporting Events in Perth

There seems to be a lot of big (and often ‘extreme’!) sporting events on in Perth later this year. Here is a run down…

Avon Descent – 5 and 6 August 06

Competitors take on the Avon and Swan rivers in a variety of power paddle craft in an exciting two-day time trial covering 133 gruelling kilometres.

Start is at Northam, goes through Toodyay and Avon and Walyunga National Parks, and finish in Bayswater.

Telstra Rally Australia – 26 to 29 October 2006

Telstra Rally Australia 2006 is the 14th round the FIA World Rally Championship.
This is the last time the Australian round of the championship will be held in Perth so get ready and block out Thursday 26th October to Sunday 29th October for what is sure to be some of the most exciting motor sport action you’ll ever see!

Extreme Frisbee World Championships!! – 11 to 18 November 06

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast- paced team sport similar to netball, played on a rugby sized field and with a ‘disk’ or ‘frisbee’ as it is commonly known, rather than a ball.
This is the first time that this week-long event has been held in the Southern Hemisphere, and is being played at the UWA Sports Park.

Red Bull Air Race and Festival – Sunday 19 November 06

The final round of the Red Bull Air Race 2006 series will be hosted in Perth, where eleven of the world’s best pilots will compete against each other in a series of breathtaking races. They will travel at speeds of 400 kilometres per hour, only a few meters above the ground through tight, demanding courses.

Velux 5 Oceans Yacht Race – 5 December to 7 January 07

Formerly the BOC Challenge, the Velux 5 Oceans is the longest running single-handed round the world yacht race. Fremantle will welcome the world’s top yachtsmen in December on their first stop-over in the 30,000 mile ocean race.

I don’t have much info about this yet, so don’t know what there will be to see and do, but it sounds like something would be happening, so again, I’ll let you know more details when I get them!

Gravity Games H20 – 7 to 10 December 06

The Gravity Games H2O return to Perth for the 3rd time in 2006. McCallum Park, Victoria Park is the perfect choice of venue for the H2O activities of Wake Boarding, Thundercat Racing and new to the 2006 medal event schedule, Jetski Racing. This years event will also feature all of the high flying action of the Vert Demo’s in Skateboarding, BMX and Inline, as well as the death defying antics of the those crazy Freestyle Motocross Riders and much more.
