Our weekend: fashion show, Leederville, etc

2006_06_16_1326.jpg

In a strange twist, I ended up going to the EveryWoman Expo with friends on Friday night, but I only saw the fashion show, because we didn’t get there until 7pm and the show didn’t finish till 8.30pm. Even while we were walking to the exit there wasn’t anything to see or freebies to get, because all the stalls were packed up, ha ha!

We went to the fashion show, because a friend was a model in it. It was good, because I’d never been to a fashion show before, and it was interesting. They even had little toddlers modelling, so cute! The show was organised by Metro Modelling, who have offices all over Perth.

2006_06_16_1322.jpg While I was waiting for my friends beforehand, I had a look around the big foyer area of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. There are a lot of meeting and ball rooms on the left side. There was also an art exhibition in one area, and lots of art displayed throughout the foyer. What a shame though, that the design of the whole thing (outside of it, mainly), is so, well, ugly, and that it doesn’t take advantage of the great position next to the Swan River! Very strange! Hmm, I’ve just been reading the website, and the ballrooms and one of the foyers do have views of the Swan, apparently. I think the whole big foyer should have been on that side, but I’m not an architect, and I guess they would’ve had their reasons…Anyway, after that we went to see The Da Vinci Code in the cinema in the city. I noticed a sushi place next door where they have all the plates going around on a moving ‘thing’(can’t think of the word!). Will have to check that out some time, just for the novelty of it!

I hadn’t read the book, so the movie was ok, and I didn’t think it was too complicated.

When I got home at midnight, Pascal and my brother were up watching The Netherlands play in the World Cup. They won (of course?), but it was still exciting towards the end.

Last night we celebrated a friends birthday in Leederville. We had dinner at Giardini’s, and Italian Restaurant on Oxford St. I’m not good at reviews (because I like nearly everything!), but I liked it, nice, but not to posh. Pascal had a risotto, and I had the cannelloni. They had nice cakes for desert, but my friend and I went for a strawberry cocktail instead…..

Because after dinner we headed over to the Leederville Hotel for a whole night of dancing! It had a been a while…! And I was expecting to feel a bit out of place between all the really young people, but it wasn’t that bad at all, and there were also plenty of older songs and rock (more our style) songs played. A good night out! And when we left, we were lucky enough to get a taxi just after walking around the corner to Oxford St!

RTRFM’s Winter Music Festival – Saturday 17 June

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

After my last post about events on this weekend, I’ve discovered another reasonably big event, the RTRFM’s Winter Music Festival! It’s on tonight (Saturday) at the Moore’s Building in Freo, from 6pm onwards. Lots of bands and djs, check out the lineup on the website!
I don’t know how I missed it (there are about 20 websites I keep my eye on!), but it proves that I still haven’t found the website that keeps track of ALL events in Perth (I have a feeling it doesn’t exist ;) ).

If anyone wants to help me keep track of events, the best site I’ve found is www.upcoming.org. You can then also put a link to the events on your own website, like I have on the right here. I’ve already added most venues in Perth, so it’s not much effort to add an event. Including a link to your source, or where tickets are sold, is handy.

The Psychic Awareness Magical Fair is on once a month at the Fremantle Town Hall. From 10am till 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. $5 entry.

Still on this week and weeks to come are the Bunyip exhibition at the State Library, and the The Amazing Human Body at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

World Cup 06 – Perth Events

Monday, June 12th, 2006

EDIT: 17 Pubs in Perth have extended opening hours, see this post!

I have finally got the lowdown on what is happening in Leederville (or not!), thanks to an email from the Town of Vincent, and a link from Ryano to the Football West website.

Australia vs. Japan Monday June 12 – the Leederville Hotel, Oxford St Leederville 6pm till 12am (for a 9pm kick-off)

  • Big screen
  • 96FM live Broadcast and 96FM Thunder appearances
  • Panel show Competitions and prizes all night!

Australia vs. Brazil Sunday June 18 – Members Equity Stadium, Pier St Perth 7pm till 3am (for a 12am kick-off)

  • See Perth Glory vs. Malaysian Under 23 National Team
  • Performances by John Stevens (Noise Works) and Ian Moss (Cold Chisel)
  • Food and drink available throughout the night
  • Big screens to watch the game Live 96FM Broadcast!

Tickets are $10 and can be pre-purchased at Members Equity Stadium from Wednesday June 7.

There are plenty of other pubs that will have big screens up for the matches in the normal evening hours, but it seems some are still waiting for approval to be open late to be able to show the middle of the night games that the Socceroos play.

You could just have a quiet night at home, or a party with friends; SBS is broadcasting all the games live.

Or you could do something different entirely! I’ll keep you updated on other events! ;)

UPDATE: Metro City in Northbridge look like they’ll be screening all matches. $5 cover charge, unless you have a group of 10 or more. The poster tells us quite a bit, but I can’t find any confirmation on their website…

UPDATE 2: Matt from Lambie.org has made a nice overview of the Perth times of all the World Cup Matches. Check it out here. Thanks again Matt, as I said, it has already proved useful to Pascal!

Gucci shop in Perth

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

While reading the West this morning, I came across the story that Gucci are opening a shop in Perth, on the corner of King and Hay streets, in the heritage-listed Monash House.

It’s definetly not my area to shop, but it’s a nice area to wander around in.
The shop is opening on Monday, and will offer everything from handbags and luggage to their gift collection. The ready to wear collection will be sent to Perth from Milan twice a year. In August there will be an exclusive showing, with ’supermodel’ Gemma Ward.

Events this weekend – 9/10/11 June 06

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Bunyip exhibition starts in the State Library as part of the Winter Arts Festival. It’s on until July 24th.

Mexican Film Festival, on the whole weekend at the Film and Television Institute of WA (in Freo).

The Amazing Human Body, an anatomical display of real human bodies at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre starts on Saturday and is on until July 16th.

Tim Minchin, a comedian, is performing at the Dolphin Theatre at UWA in Nedlands on Saturday and Sunday night. Tim Minchin won the Best Newcomers Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Festival Directors’ Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2005.

Tulip Planting at Araluen Botanic Park in Roleystone. On Saturday and Sunday you can volunteer to help with the annual tulip planting. You will get free entry into the park, and morning tea. The weather report is looking good (fine and about 20 degrees), so that would make it very enjoyable.

On Sunday you can also do some planting on the other side of Perth, at Whiteman Park, for the Children’s Forest Annual Planting Day. There will be a sausage sizzle and free entertainment. The Children’s Forest is in between the Village and Mussel Pool. See the map on the website.

Enjoy your weekend! We’re heading to Bunbury to help out my parents with renovations, so there may not be many postings…(they have a computer though…!).

Fremantle

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

2006 06 05 1268Well, we didn’t actually make it to any events this weekend (hey, who said you always had to be doing ’stuff’ to enjoy Perth, it certainly wasn’t me! :p ). But we did make it into Fremantle on Monday afternoon, and enjoyed the sunshine and atmosphere.

Unfortunately there weren’t any activities left to do from the Heritage Festival (will try and do better next year!), we couldn’t find the exhibition at the train station, and the display at Angus and Robertson was only 4 photos (interesting though). I did discover which nice building was the Town Hall, read some ‘historical’ signs, and took some photos in High Street.

We also walked with Bailey at South Beach (there were people swimming there!!!!), had a look at the Welcome Walls at the Maritime Museum, and had an early dinner at the E-shed Markets, where we had a nice spot outside in the sun.

I’ll leave you with a photo of Bailey, who thought that the statue of the dog at Victoria Quay was real, even sniffing it’s butt!

Wine and Food Festival Review / Perth Food blogs

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

Matt from Abstract Gourmet has done a nice review of his visit to the WA Wine & Food Festival, including photos. Read his post here.

You’ll love his blog if you’re into food and/or are a coffee geek! He posts recipes with photos, and has done a few reviews on Perth restaurants and cafes.

Another Perth foodie blog: spiceblog Anthony is also involved in the new WA food magazine, Spice Magazine. I have just seen that that is a weblog too!

EDIT: Just bumped into another food blog, The Food Pornographer (no actual porn as far as I can see ;) ).

And of course there is also Jennifer’s Chocolate and Espresso Tour.

I’m not going to mention other good food blogs outside of WA, but if you want more, check out the links on the above blogs! Or try a blog search engine like gnoos or australianblogs.com.au.

Australian Model Railway Expo

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

A bit late with this (been spending to much time on the new site design, do you like it?), but it’s still on tomorrow:

Australian Model Railway Expo at the Showgrounds in Claremont from 10am till 5pm.

See superb model railways, plus trade displays, talk with preservation groups for help and advice.

A show for all the family, including rides on miniature steam train. The train will stop at the Showgrounds Station, but there will be a half line closure due to work on Sun 4 and Mon 5 June and between Showgrounds and Fremantle only a replacement bus service will operate.

In one of the other pavilions Tony Sadler are having a furniture clearance sale, just so you know…!
