Guys, can anyone who’s attended, tell me what sort of size of crowd to expect at an open mic night at the Brisbane Hotel on a Tuesday? I’d like to do standup for the first time ever – and would prefer a fairly small crowd to start with. Also, will I have to tone down my Scottish accent (and mandatory sweary words that seem to just slip in sometimes in place of commas) for people to understand me?! I saw Danny Bhoy in May (I was the guy he took the piss out of for being from the ‘other’ Perth) and he was easily understood – but his accent is soft (to me anyway).

hi people… its ovee. big fan of standups. love to try something on the stage… got some of my own line ups.. i did few amature standups in melb… but that was just a small ones like in a party or 21st.. stuff like that. i was just wondering if there is any chance for the newbis in perth? just a real open mic? and any particular rules? whats the rules on F & N words, sexual and racial jokes in perth? or is it a 100% open mic? who do i have to contact?

If you want to learn just come along to Tuesday night at the Brisbane and there will be plenty of comics who will tell you how to do it.

The best way to learn is to do it. The Brisbane Hotel holds open mic stand-up events on Tuesdays IIRC. There are lots of first-timers and the crowd is very forgiving. Sets run at 5mins each.
