Hula Bula Bar; tropical cocktails, hidden away

Saturday we met up with friends at the The Hula Bula Bar, which was a real experience! Very nicely decorated, with all sorts of scary masks (like Maori ones), bamboo, lights, etc! It’s at 12 Victoria Avenue, Perth, so towards East Perth when you’re in the city. It’s hidden away, underneath a hotel.

They had very nice cocktails, from $10 to $32!! Because we arrived early (8.30pm) we had a nice corner, but the peoples that were later had to wait in line for ages! It was very popular, and small!

Unfortunately it also closed at midnight, but some of us went on to Northbridge, which was still very lively. Ended up in Leederville having a kebab.

Opening times as at May 2007:

Wednesday 4-11pm

Thursday 4-11pm

Friday 4-1am

Saturday 6-1am

Tuesday and Sunday for functions

Yeah, the Hula Bula Bar is Perth’s only little “nook and cranny” type joint and it’s an absolute treat. They’ve gone really full on with the whole tiki bar theme and you can’t not have a good time hanging out there. Get there early because it is tiny.

Thanks for the write up Josie, totally agree!

i was wondering what you fine people could tell me about this place, as i’m looking into the possibility of a cocktail party there for a university organisation. do you think it would be an appropriate [read: interesting and unique] place to have an end of semester event? let me know what you think – i’d be delighted to know!

  5. Simone says:

sounds like a plan, but how many people would you expect, it’s really small! I also don’t know if you can reserve an area of it. Best to get in contact with them direct!

But I definitely think it’s an interesting and unique place!
    :D

Hula Bula is a really good night out for all ages. Great music, fantastically decorated – well done babs!
The owners have also recently opened a larger theme club called Devilles – which is opposite McIvor Train Station, on the Northbridge side. Its Devil themed, and looks like an underworld 50’s volcano movie set, complete with volcano on dance floor, and she devil statues scattered around the place. – ALOT bigger than HB Bar, and good food too – searved all night. Open till 2am – $10 entry.

    :) check it owt!

agreed! I love Devilles, have been several times.

If I still did ‘bar’ reviews on this website, I’d write about it with praise, hehe

  10. Jesse says:

i was disgusted by the bouncer here, he refused a group of friends and i entry for my 19th birthday for NO reason at all (we werent even drunk, disorderly or underage), i suggest not going there

  12. jerry says:

probably because it’s an “over 25’s” bar
    see their website

  13. chloe says:

is the over 25s strict? cos i have friends who say they get in all the time even though they’re 18

  14. Simone says:

It depends I think, how you’re dressed, if you’re drunk, etc. They want a more ‘mature’, ’sophisticated’ crowd I think, whatever that means ;) I’m just not sure.

I was in a group of 8 girls for a birthday on Friday night and was also refused entry because there were too many of us??? We were very well dressed, all over 25 and a are a good looking group of girls I have to say! No one was drunk as it was our first stop for the night. We watched as they continued to let in numerous other patrons in groups of 2 and 3, totalling alot more people than our group of 8. There was also no queue whatsoever when we arrived. We were not happy! Had we known this we would have just separated ourselves into groups of 2 or 3 before we got there. Seems very strange to us indeed…..
