The York Festival 2017

This event has passed!

The York Festival returns bigger than ever in 2017; now across one month, with two big weekends! Saturday 16 September – Sunday 15 October 10am – 4.30pm.

WA’s oldest inland town kicks off its annual community celebration of culture and arts on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September at the 2017 The York Festival. Thousands will visit the charming, historic Wheatbelt town (just one hour from Perth) as York comes alive across the weekend with music, art, food, performance, workshops, exhibitions and activities for all ages. This year, festival exhibitions will be month-long for the first time, culminating on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 October at the renowned York Festival Maker’s Markets.

York is an easy one hour drive east of the Perth CBD, off the Great Southern Highway. Nestled on the banks of the Avon River in the West Australian Wheatbelt, the district offers unique insights into Western Australia's rich and colourful past, both before and following European settlement in 1831.

York’s location and heritage inform much of the content of the York Festival program, of which highlights include: The Hay Bale Challenge sculpture competition; the launch of the Americana Music Association of Australia with an Americana/alt country music showcase; The Act-Belong-Commit Mt Brown Run-Cycle event; The Great Gold Hunt; The Running of the Lambs - a ninja-warrior style obstacle course for kids; arts and craft workshops for children and adults, and the festival’s Makers Market.

The York Festival activities take place throughout the town in many of the town’s historic landmark buildings which will host exhibitions and entertainment, including the York Town Hall, Old York Courthouse, the Troopers Yard, Peace Park, the RSL, CWA and the Sandalwood Yards. Wander down Avon Terrace, enjoy the sounds of street buskers and soak up the charm and heritage of York.

Free guided Walking Tours will take place throughout both major weekends of the festival; delving into the architecture and cultural history of York during the day, and a night-time ghost tour for those more daring.

Entertainment, art performance highlights include: - Roald Dahl's The Twits presented by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre; - The Act-Belong-Commit York Conversations: a ‘slice of life’ exhibition at the Town Hall, featuring stories and artefacts from people who were/are a part of York history, in their own words; - Bilya Yep Waangkiny – readings from Balladong poets (Saturday 16 September, 2pm, Country Women’s Association Courtyard): an intimate afternoon of poetry, readings and memories by Northam Noongar community members including Janet Kickett, Yvonne Kickett, Deborah Moody, Tanya Mabo, Julie Wynne, Cyndy Moody and more. From walking country to motherhood to memories of Elders, these poems speak of matters of the heart and tell stories of Balladong country and beyond. - The Artitja Fine Art Spring Salon: showcasing Australian Aboriginal artists from regional and remote communities from across the North-west, central Australia and the Northern Territory, presented in York for the first time at Gallery152; - The Act-Belong-Commit York Society Art & Craft Award, an annual event that runs from 7th-15th October; - The Sambanista’s: drumming troupe who will conduct a drumming workshop at 1pm at the Courthouse, and perform with a massive parade down Avon Terrace at 2.50pm; - Plenty more on the program.

Entry to most Festival events is FREE or by gold coin donation, except for certain ticketed events. There is Wheelchair access available at all venues. Parking is free within York.
