The Same Paige/Janey Does Stand-up
Double Bill
Two short comedies by award-winning writer Anna Bennetts feature in FRINGE WORLD comedy double bill The Same Paige and Janey Does Stand-Up as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights from 14 February 2012.
Paige is a writer with a vivid imagination who gets more than she bargained for when she finds herself in an absurd women’s writers group.
After staging the short play with Pocket Theatre in 2005, Bennetts took the play to London where it had repeated success in the fringe. The Same Paige was selected out of over 100 entries to be part of Equinox Drama’s New Comedy Scene and performed in the Colourhouse Theatre, Merton Abbey Mills in 2008, and in 2009 was shortlisted out of over 500 entries in the UK Sitcom trials and performed in Leicester Square Theatre in 2009, winning the audience vote.
New York trained filmmaker Bennetts recently shot a pilot episode of The Same Paige, which is currently in post-production.
Companion piece to The Same Paige, Janey Does Stand-Up was written while Bennetts was in London and inspired by too many hours watching free-to-air TV.
Times are tough for Janey, a frightfully posh actress who’s past her prime. In the midst of London’s post-GFC pinch, perhaps it’s time to try stand-up comedy?
With fellow New York Film Academy graduate, Patrick Aguirre producing the shows, Janey Does Stand-up will be a multimedia experience that will transport you into modern day London.
Anna Bennetts won the Asia Pacific Regional Award in the BBC World Service International Radio Play competition with her play Shift in 2009 and received runner-up in the drama category of the Hope Awards for her short film Unlock in 2006.
Featuring a superb ensemble, including key members of the original Same Paige cast, Summer Williams (Paige) and Rose McKenna (Janey) who are joined by Kym Bidstrup and emerging artists Melanie Bennett, Kathy Shields and Jackson Wimhurst.

“I was part of an unusual women’s writers group when I lived in Bangkok. It made me think about
group dynamics and how a collective insanity can take over when you put a bunch of people in a
room together.” (Anna Bennetts)

it, so getting short-listed in the Sitcom Trials got me thinking about it as a TV series. I developed
