The Glass Menagerie

This event has passed!
The Glass Menagerie is described as being a memory play, a genre created by the author Tennessee Williams. To that end, it is told through the memories of the narrator, Tom, and is in this respect representative of the author himself, being largely autobiographical. It is also an exploration of all of the memories of the characters involved. Amanda, the southern Belle with 17 gentlemen callers, who married a handsome young man only to be abandoned along with her two young children, Laura and Tom. Laura, whose memories of a young man she knew briefly at school are all that come between her and her retreat from reality, her little glass animals. Tom, caught between his family and his passion to live life. Jim, whose school days were a wonderful promise of things to come. But more than this, it is a story of love. The love of family, of a mother for her children, of a brother for his sister, of young men torn between their desires and their obligations. As a social commentary it highlights the need for all of us, no matter our gender, to have the ability to care for and maintain ourselves when we do not have family who can do so. This play is considered to be one of the masterpieces of American literature. It will by turn inspire you, delight you, intrigue you and tear at your heartstrings. Written by a playwright who has deservedly earned his place in modern literature, it is exquisitely crafted as a delicate and poignant study of poetry in prose. Performed by a stellar cast and directed by Siobhan Vincent, an actress now familiar to the audiences at Garrick Theatre, KADS and Darlington Theatre Players, this is a production not to be missed.
