Slut - Blue Room Theatre
Little y Theatre Company turns the spotlight on the media and the audience in Patricia Corneliusʼ award-winning play Slut, a searing examination of sexuality and the pressure to conform, from 1 November as part of The Blue Room Theatreʼs Personal Season and the Perth Pride Festival.
Lolita is a vulnerable young woman who revels in the attentions of men and is judged by a chorus of her peers - with tragic consequences. Slut makes the audience probe own their views on equality, peer pressure and societal expectation.
The piece draws inspiration from an infamous Melbourne nightclub shooting where a young woman and two men were shot, one fatally. Newspapers raided her MySpace page, labelling her a ʻparty girl who liked fast thingsʼ.
“What assumptions were readers making as they read the morning papers while she fought for her life in hospital?” asked director Emily McLean.
This will be the first chance for Perth audiences to see Corneliusʼ powerful script, which won a Writerʼs Guild Award and the Richard Wherritt Award in 2009.
“Itʼs the most interesting and powerful piece Iʼve read for years,” said McLean. “It forces our private judgements to be looked at in the harsh glare of the theatre lights.”
Slut will be Little yʼs second Blue Room Theatre production this year, following their sell-out run of Scent Tales as part of The Blue Room Theatreʼs Up Close season.
