National Science Week at the Art Gallery of WA
During National Science Week the Art Gallery of Western Australia is giving members of the public the chance to learn about the fascinating art of facial reconstruction. Participants will be guided through the main stages undertaken in this process, under the guidance of Dr Susan Hayes from the University of Western Australia. Facial reconstruction involves approximating the facial appearance of a deceased individual, working from what we know about how the shapes of the skull relate to muscles, fat and skin.
One group will build the muscles up over the replica skull of a unique individual, while two other groups will be instructed in the art of drawing an approximation from photographs. The clay build up and drawing sessions will be held on different days in the main foyer of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and will constitute both a display of facial anatomy and an interactive demonstration. The project will culminate in a display of the reconstructions and drawings.
