Mosaic Capture Day

Framing a single day in WA

Propel Youth Arts WA is on a mission to document 24 hours of life of WA
Propel Youth Arts WA is once again calling out to people of all ages, backgrounds and locations across Western Australia to take a snapshot of life from their perspective, as part of an ongoing crowdsourced photography project called Mosaic.

On Saturday 28 September, also known as Mosaic Capture Day, more than 300 people from around WA will capture a moment from their day and share the photo with Propel via a simple online form. Each image will form a collective narrative - providing a breathtaking snapshot of what a day in WA really looks like - and every photo submitted will then be displayed in chronological order during the free Mosaic Exhibition this October.

“Mosaic is our only project that’s open to all ages and the best part is there’s no need for special equipment for people to participate,” says Jamie McGleave, General Manager of Propel.

“Because of our all-inclusive approach, we receive images from children as young as 4 and people as old as 94, amateurs and experienced photographers, and last year we received photo submissions from people across all nine regions of WA!”

Prior to Mosaic Capture Day on Saturday 28 September, Propel will also present a series of photography workshops, facilitated by emerging Perth-based photographers for young people.

Participants can explore analogue camera techniques with film photographer Chris Beecroft, find their aesthetics in portraiture and still life with industry professionals Tasha Faye and Rebecca Mansell, and join Caroline Furst and rescue dogs from SAFE Inc. to gain skills in animal photography. These workshops can be booked via the Propel website.

Previous participant Celine Gaudin said about Mosaic 2018, “When life feels too hectic... it is time to make time! That morning, I took a moment to be “in the moment”... it was a peaceful moment of appreciation that allowed me to recenter on the important things in life.”

Every year, hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds across WA step behind their cameras to capture and submit an image from their day for Mosaic. Developed in collaboration with local photographer Jarrad Seng in 2012, Mosaic has since featured over 2,000 photos submitted by more than 1,400 people from all across WA. From Albany to Kalumburu, each photo reveals a personal story and unique moment, but also forms part of a collection that represents our State’s diverse culture, lifestyle and landscapes.
