Makuru Film Night (Free)

This event has passed!

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Join the City in recognising NRW on Saturday 1 June in the Canning Town Hall to watch Rabbit Proof Fence at the Makuru Film Night.

Makuru is one of the six Noongar seasons representing the cold and wet part of the year. It is loosely based on a true story concerning the author's mother Molly, as well as two other mixed-race Aboriginal girls, Daisy Kadibil and Gracie, who ran away from the Moore River Native Settlement, north of Perth, Western Australia, to return to their Aboriginal families, after being placed there in 1931.

There will be a Welcome to Country, speaker from Sister Kate’s and delicious bush tucker nibbles. Water, juice, tea and coffee will also be available as well as seating, toilets and ample parking. The film is PG and family friendly, we encourage all to attend this free event. Seating is limited so bookings are required.
