FRINGE WORLD PERTH 2013
Perth’s FRINGE WORLD Festival is set to massively entertain in 2013, with tickets to over 300 shows on sale at fringeworld.com.au.
Expanding on the success of the first full Fringe Festival in 2012, Perth will be brought to life over four jam-packed weeks, from January 25 to February 24, with events taking place in more than 50 traditional and non-traditional venues throughout the City of Perth and beyond.
A popular favourite since Lotterywest supported its acquisition for WA in 2011, the iconic De Parel Speigeltent will make its return in 2013, this time joined by another - The West Australian Idolize Speigeltent, which features painted scenes all over its exterior and hand-carved pillars and detailing covering its ornate inside.
In addition, 10 new ‘pop-up’ venues will emerge in the nooks and crannies of the Perth city landscape. These delightfully charming spaces, which have travelled all the way from Holland include historical circus tents, a lovely vintage ‘in the round’ venue and an extraordinary carousel island bar which magically doubles as a very large fountain.
Fringe is a choose-your-own-adventure festival, and Fringe Bingers will have a chance to explore each of the ‘pop-ups’ as they make their way through the smorgasbord of comedy, cabaret, circus, dance, music, theatre and more on offer. The West Australian Idolize Spiegeltent is arriving in the Urban Orchard in the Perth Cultural Centre, the traditional heart of FRINGE WORLD. The locations of the other ‘pop-up’ venues are being revealed over the coming weeks on the FRINGE WORLD website as the mystery unfolds in the lead up to FRINGE WORLD 2013.
In a first for the Festival, FRINGE WORLD is also embracing other suburbs, with hubs of activity happening in precincts like Mount Lawley, Leederville and Fremantle.
Program highlights of the 2013 Festival program released today include return acts The Wau Wau Sisters (USA) and Barry Morgan (AUS), each coming back to entertain Perth audiences after the success of their 2011 and 2012 festival visits.
Smash hit shows from Fringes around the globe will join Perth locals including Kaput, winner of the Spirit of the Fringe Award at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Trixie and Monkey, the award-winning New York burlesque duo with their unmistakable banana-flavoured insanity; and Rob Van Vuuren, breakthrough Act Award at the inaugural Comic’s Choice Awards, will be bringing his witty observations on a variety of topics including flies, dogs and giant mutant toenails.
Making their FRINGE WORLD Festival debut after a sell out season at the Edinburgh Fringe, Comic Strip revive the vintage club era of Go-Go, Burlesque and Stand Up. Joining them is London cabaret star Spanky, appearing for the first time in Perth for a performance of hit show Candice McQueen: Nasty! Billed as Die Hard meets the Naked Gun on stage, Joe Bone's multi-award-winning Bane trilogy, Bane 1, 2 and 3, arrives in Perth with it’s southern hemisphere premiere, and fresh from Edinburgh/Adelaide sell-outs, Amy Abler brings her world-renowned cabaret to titillate, tease, and thrill Perth for the first time.
A super strong line up of local and national performers rounds out the programme including up-and-coming local comedian John Conway and magician Michael Fouche who will show you exactly how much fun you can have with a $50 note, a bikini and a bit of rope. Bawdy, brash and as fabulous as the original, critically acclaimed Sydney performer Catherine Alcorn channels the legendary Bette Midler in the smash-hit cabaret, The Divine Miss Bette and Jon Bennett will bring his unique stand-up experience to the stage with his show Pretending Things Are A Cock.
Children and families haven’t been forgotten and will laugh their heads off at the Lunar Circus Kids Comedy Gala. There’ll be something crazy, something funny, something amazing, something a bit silly and maybe even something dangerous! Jam packed with a colourful mix of the very best performers in the business, you’ll see hilarious comedy capers by the comedians and clowns, unbelievable unicyclists, tricky trapeze artists, lively acrobats, amazing musicians and much more. A great way to get the kids into FRINGE WORLD, there are also plenty of in-jokes for the parents to enjoy.
The FRINGE kicks off on 25 January and runs over four weeks, packed with an amazing selection of cabaret, sketch and stand-up comedy, theatre and music performances, with a dash of film and visual art exhibitions, there are entertainment choices to amuse, bemuse, confound and inspire until 24 February on a massive scale.
Tickets are on sale now and range from $0 - $40 with the average less than $20! Punters are encouraged to get in quick as some shows will sell out fast. The full program and tickets for all shows can be found at www.fringeworld.com.au. Gift cards are also available for the Festival; a great stocking filler for Christmas.
