DJ Kayper - the #1 FEMALE DJ FROM THE UK!!
Hailed as one of the finest DJ’s pioneering new music today, British born DJ Kayper is a seminal force on the urban, mainstream and desi music scenes. Having been approached to host a mainstream radio show for the BBC’s Asian Network in 2006, ‘The DJ Kayper Show’ has now gone on to become one of the stations biggest exports with global listenership. Her show has attracted no less than the biggest and best urban and pop music guests namely Common, Questlove, Lupe Fiasco, Nelly Furtado, Xzibit, Kelly Rowland, Omarion, Wyclef, Will.I.Am and The Game in addition to UK artists such as Estelle, Sway, Kano and Jay Sean.
As well as supporting well established artists, Kayper is a fierce advocate of homegrown talent and has ensured that she continually champions the thriving artists and musicians on her own doorstep. One of the segments on ‘The DJ Kayper’ Show provides a platform for young up and coming artists to showcase their talent to a worldwide audience.
In 2004, DJ Kayper, aka Kaajal Bakrania, broke a record by becoming the first ever female to win the Vestax Juice DJ Competition which prompted Vestax to snap her up and officially sponsored her as a DJ. Winning this competition brought her to the forefront of the DJ scene and she was being booked across the UK from London to Birmingham, Leicester and Manchester. Kayper was also nominated for Best Club DJ at the AMA’s 2008.
She has also headlined at some of the worlds most renowned nightclubs including London’s Ministry of Sound and Bar Rumba, New York City’s famed SOB’s, The Knitting Factory and Joe’s Pub. Kayper has also performed at Malaysia’s Zouk Club, Johannesburg’s Coca Cola Dome, Ibiza’s El Divino and Mumbai’s largest Prive.
All this and she hasn’t even broken a sweat!!
Her innate ability to understand audiences worldwide and keep the dancefloors rocking has meant that her talent is in continual demand by club promoters. Armed with her treasure trove of trusted vinyl, not only has she taken her talents abroad to play to audiences as far as 5 world continents, she has also spun wax alongside her idol DJ Jazzy Jeff as well as DJ Cash Money, Clinton Sparks, Killa Kela, Scratch Perverts and Mr. Thing. She’s also played as a support DJ to Pete Rock, Pharaoh Monch, Ghostface (Wu-Tang Clan), Guru (Gangstarr), Common, Arrested Development and Roy Ayres.
Working and playing alongside stars is always a buzz for Kayper but if it wasn’t for her curious nature at an early age, we may not be blessed with her skills. It was her mischievous antics at school that left her with a moniker that stuck. Never one for libraries and books, she fell hook line and sinker for her now first love, DJ’ing. Having spent hours on end watching her older cousin's and brother practicing on thier decks she tried to emulate thier skills.
Detecting her talent, her brother and cousin's encouraged her to develop her skills and guided her in the right direction while she came up with her mode of self-education. She clocked up countless hours of arduous practice never tiring of playing in order to come up with her own unique style and made her first serious premiere as a DJ at London’s Ministry of Sound. Her journey has not been without its hardships though. Her gender has meant that she has endured being outcast by other DJ’s who would later come to embrace her as an esteemed equal.
Kayper has championed UK sounds for as long as she has DJ’d. Alongside a DJ fraternity including DJ 279, Skully & Pogo, they formed The Associates and held down one of London’s hottest urban music club nights ‘The Get Down’ at urban music staple club, Bar Rumba. As a promoter, she has brought to the UK some hip-hop greats of our time to her weekly night ‘Ebonics’ formerly in Cambridge and now at London’s Plan B, Brixton. The laid back night invites hip hop connoisseurs and lover of all types of urban music including reggae, hip hop, R&B and more to soak up the aural delights. She has also promoted and created nationwide tours with Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money and Shortee Blitz.
