Christmas at the Fremantle Markets

This event has passed!

One of the nicest things about Christmas is the sense of community it encourages this time of year.

In the spirit of supporting the local community, Fremantle Markets is offering an array of events to enjoy and great gifts to buy from independent artists, producers and crafters this holiday season. So if you’re looking for something different to the usual stress of shopping centres and supermarkets this Christmas, come down to Fremantle Markets.

Here’s a sneak peek of what’s on at Fremantle Markets this year during the holiday season:

Fremantle Markets is rich with atmosphere and local talent. If you’re looking for a unique or locally made Christmas present that differs from generic gifts, you’ll find it here. Not to mention the fact that we have plenty of locally sourced produce for a delicious Christmas lunch. Here’s our select 2012 Christmas Gift Guide at the markets: For her: Jewellery, clothing, accessories and cosmetics – we have it all! For Australian jewellery look no further than some of our most well-known jewellery traders, such as Aussie Opals Direct and Zingara. Buy her clothing with a conscious with hand-picked and free-trade clothes at Free Bird. Or perhaps she’d prefer some organic cosmetics, skincare and haircare made in WA from The Honey Pot, Corrynnes Natural Soaps and Body Products and Bush Essentials. Also, you can’t go wrong with the beautiful flowers at Flowers For The Soul. For him: Forget about ties and socks as gifts for him, why not try something more interesting this year? Camping lovers will probably adore anything from J & K Energy House, which offers a huge range of camping goods. Replica Guitars is always extremely popular with the guys and music fans. And for car fanatics, visit the Retro Trading Company, which stocks reproduction and original signs and automotive memorabilia. For the kids: The first thing kids think of when it comes to presents is toys, and there are some special ones at Fremantle Markets Toy Shop, which sells old-style and quality wooden toys that are both fun and educational. Fremantle Markets also has a good selection of hand-made clothing and accessories for the little ones, which are great as gifts for both children and expectant mothers, such as Snug as Bug baby slings, the sweetest beanies at Little Beaneez and lovely kids clothes at Lalaland. For everyone: Art is a wonderful gift for just about everyone and Fremantle Markets is proud to offer an array of local talent. For lovers of photography, there is Richard Smyth Wild Earth Images, with some stunning natural landscape and wildlife photography. Moonlight Studios offers personalised photographic gift packages, with photographer Ali Moon creating your very own photo-shoot in the markets – a great idea for those seeking to give professional family portraits for Christmas. True Blue sells authentic Aboriginal Art, while Orna’s Folk Art & Craft has an array of beautiful hand-painted wares made in WA, including the popular personalised wooden plaques with customised sayings for your loved ones to hang on their walls. Stocking fillers: If you’re looking for some special items to fill up your Christmas stockings, try the fudge at Gidge Gourmet Fudge, confectionery at Fremantle Candy Store and some Morish Nuts. The candles and melts at Soy-Delicious are also a great little treat. For Christmas lunch: As a coastal city, Fremantle has some of the finest seafood right on its doorstep. In typical Australian style, we suggest having a seafood-themed Christmas lunch with produce from Weststate Seafoods, who supply a range of fresh seafood straight from the ocean. Complement this seafood menu with some locally sourced fruit and vegetables from our stallholders, as well as our delicious variety of quality meats, freshly-baked bread and dairy products. We recommend Lawleys Bakery, Karutz Smallgoods, The Mousetrap Gourmet Cheese Shop and Clara’s Wholefoods.

Xmas Elf Saturday, 1 & 15 December, 2pm – 3pm

Our witty Christmas Elf, Tinsel, will be spreading her magic this Christmas. Walking on stilts measuring almost 3 meters tall with her breathtakingly beautiful costume, Tinsel is extremely popular with the kids (and adults too). She really speaks to the heart of the Christmas spirit in the old days, when actors would tour European markets in travelling troupes to perform Christmas plays and entertain children. This is a unique Christmas treat a true market experience.

Angel of Light Friday, 7 & 14 December, 6pm – 7pm

Another member of our stilt-walking family, the Angel of Light will delight and inspire young and old with her stunning costume. Watch her wings light up like an illuminating Christmas Tree and gasp in awe. Joined by our Toy Soldiers and Market Fairies, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the magical Christmas tale, The Nutcracker.

The Market Fairies appear every Saturday from 10am till 1pm, and every Sunday from 11am till 2pm, distributing random acts of kindness, along with face painting and balloon twisting for the little ones.

Free Pottery Class for the Kids Friday, 21 December, 9am – 11am Christmas time also means school holidays, with many parents trying to come up with ideas to entertain the kids. Rather than letting them spend their holidays in front of the TV, why not come and join our free Pottery Class for kids? Potter Judy Nastov will show your little ones how to make an ornament out of clay. The clay is self-drying, so the children can make something and take it home with them on the same day. No booking is required for this wonderful little class – just come down to the Market Lane at Fremantle Markets to join in.

Wildlife Zoo Every Friday, 2pm – 4pm We love having West Oz Wildlife, one of Perth’s leading wildlife petting zoos, at Fremantle Markets. They provide a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with native Australian animals such as koalas, snakes, dingoes and wombats. You can usually only glimpse such animals amidst big crowds in larger reserves or zoos. Our Wildlife Zoo offers a more intimate approach, allowing both children and adults to experience these animals in a smaller and more relaxed setting.

Baby Animal Farm Every Saturday, 9am – 11am There is usually a bevy of gushing sighs around our Baby Animal Farm in the Market Lane. These adorable animals capture everyone’s heart. Come and cuddle a lovely selection of cute animals, including chickens, ducklings, bunnies, guinea pigs, lambs, kid goats, piglets and, depending upon availability, a calf, alpaca, or miniature horse.

Santa with Gifts for the Kids Monday, 24 December, 11am – 2pm Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Santa, so bring the kids to say hi to him and receive some presents. Fremantle Markets is lucky to have an extra special Santa visiting this year from the Channel 7 Christmas pageant.
