Chinese New Year at Garden City

This event has passed!

Join the festivities when Garden City celebrates Chinese New Year!

Garden City Shopping Centre will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Saturday January 28 with a traditional Chinese New Year parade.

The parade kicks off at 1:00pm and will include two lion head masks performing the traditional lion dance together with customary dancers. The demonstration will be for 45 minutes and will start at the Dymocks entrance of the mall and finish up at Citibank.

Traditional red lantern decorations will also hang above the Dome Café in the Centre Court. The lanterns are red to symbolize fire and are believed to drive away bad luck. Victoria Hansen, Marketing Manager of Garden City said “We are excited to welcome the parade to the centre. The dance will attract a lot of attention and generate excitement, creating a fun experience for the shoppers whilst highlighting a popular multicultural holiday.” Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar. It commemorates the end of winter and the first day of spring. The holiday is honoured by a range of Asian countries including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. Traditionally the themes tie in with good fortune, happiness and wealth.
