Canto Ostinato at Winthrop Hall
Experience a unique Festival event as four pianists on four grand pianos present a cult sensation that has been performed in concert halls, art galleries and railway stations across Europe: Canto Ostinato.
No two performances are ever alike, the players dictating moment to moment how the work’s 106 short cells – its musical DNA – will be played. Their decisions transform a deceptively simple score into lyrical grandeur, the music evolving into a hypnotically repeating, gently undulating sonic tapestry.
More a ritual experience than a regular concert, Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt spent three years refining this distinctive creation. Described as the musical love child of Philip Glass and Rachmaninov, Canto Ostinato has won over audiences with luscious harmonies that evolve, merge and diverge in a mystical circle of sound.
