BHP Billiton Pacific Sporting and Arts Festival Perth
The Moana Pasifika Inc is an organisation which aims to build stronger families and communities within Australia which will share the richness of the Pacific Island nations for all Australians.
A popular vehicle for cross-cultural interaction and development is the love of music, dance, song and sport. With this in mind, the Committee of Moana Pasifika Inc seeks to continue to foster an annual event, the BHP Billiton Pacific Sporting and Arts Festival. The festival is an annual event that celebrates the pride and passion of our Maori and Pacific Island communities through cultural song, dance, speech, art and sport and is now recognised as an important means of keeping the Polynesian Culture alive in Australia.
Moana Pasifika has built this event from a small gathering of 100 local community members in 2008 to an community attendance of over 2000 in 2011, which attracted people from Melbourne Victoria, Port Hedland, Newman Karratha, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, as well as the greater Perth metropolitan area. In 2012 we continue in our efforts to become the largest non profit Maori & Pacific Island’s cultural festival in Western Australia.
The Festival will will come alive with passion, culture, sports, colour and creativity. It is a place where we celebrate the cultural diversity of Australia, and invite people from all races, religions and gender to join in and enjoy and learn the Polynesian culture. Moana Pasifika invites all peoples to attend and enjoy the watching the sports, traditional polynesian food and performances from performing art groups Indigenous to Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, all of which is free to everyone and opens on march the 3rd with a traditional “Welcome to the Country” performance, performed by local indigenous groups, followed by a traditional Polynesian welcome."Ko te kanorau te matua atua, ko te kotahitanga te koa - Diversity is the magic, Unity is the joy."
