“A Night of Inspiration” to rebuild little lives

Sports personality, John Welborn will help raise much needed funds for the
children of Thailand at the Hands Across the Water ‘Night of Inspiration’
fundraiser on the 19th of March 2010.

Hands Across the Water, founded by former forensic police officer Peter Baines, is one of Australia’s fastest growing charities. Since its humble beginnings in Peter’s kitchen, Hands has raised over $2 million dollars without spending one cent of donor’s money on administration.

In the four years since its inception Hands has built two orphanages, established a rubber plantation and construction is now underway on its million dollar medical and community centre.

Peter Baines founded Hands after spending three months working in Thailand following the devastation of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. During his work in Thailand Peter became aware of a group of children who had been orphaned and were living in a tent.

“After seeing the kids living in a tent, it just didn’t feel right to go home and pretend that everything would be okay,” said Peter.

Hands’ strategy is a long term commitment to the Thailand community

“We now have children living at the orphanage who weren’t even born when the Tsunami hit. The needs are bigger then what I ever first imagined. In Australia, most of us have moved on because it is no longer on the front page of the newspaper, this doesn’t mean life over there has returned to normal,” said Peter.

“Hands is making a long term difference by funding education programs and addressing high unemployment rates in the community. That is why these nights are so important to us. These nights provide awareness and financial support for our programs,” said Peter.

Funds raised from the night at Subicao Oval will be used to establish a medical clinic and short term accommodation for the children of the region.

The cost of a ”Night of Inspiration” tickets are $150 or a table of 10 for $1500 and bookings can be purchased through the Hands website (www.handsacrossthewater.org.au).

Gordon Bray will be the Master of Ceremonies and will be joined by various sports identities throughout the night.
